CURE Auto Insurance: A Not-For-Profit Insurance Provider in the NJ/PA Area

CheapCarInsuranceinc.com Rating: ★★★★½

Wouldn’t it be great if there were a not-for-profit insurance provider in your area that offered lower rates and didn’t artificially inflate your monthly premiums based on seemingly unimportant elements, such as your credit score? Well, if you live in New Jersey or Pennsylvania, there is such a provider: CURE (Citizens United Reciprocal Exchange) Auto Insurance. The company focuses exclusively on Automobile policies (as opposed to offering additional products like Homeowner’s Insurance) and calculates premiums based exclusively on your driving record. For more information on what to expect from CURE, keep reading.

CURE Insurance Review

CURE is not only a small, local company operating in two Northeastern states, but it’s also a not-for-profit organization; therefore, it’s no surprise they don’t have an official rating with a credit rating agency such as A.M. Best. For the most part, they have some pretty positive customer service reviews. However, there does seem to be a minority of customers who assert that their claims process was confusing, lengthy, and left them feeling extremely dissatisfied with CURE’s service.

CURE Insurance Discounts

CURE prides itself as a not-for-profit company that protects drivers from discriminatory practices which they believe most other insurers practice. CURE promises to offer low rates for careful drivers who have a clean driving record, and not to base a customer’s monthly premium on things like education level, home ownership status, or occupation. The discounts in the chart below are reflective of this particular business philosophy.

Discount Type Discount Amount
Multi-Vehicle Collision Discount 15% on Collision coverage
Good Driver Discount – 3Y 35%
Good Driver Discount – 5Y + 2Y as CURE policyholder 40%
Parking Discount 15 – 50% on Comprehensive & Collision

CURE Auto Insurance Options

CURE doesn’t go into very deep detail on their website about the types of coverage they offer to their customers. One would assume, however, that they offer at least the minimum types of coverage required by New Jersey and Pennsylvania law, and in the minimum required amounts, for drivers to legally be on the road. In New Jersey, those coverages are:

Minimum Required Coverage Minimum Required Dollar Amount
Liability Bodily Injury 15,000/30,000
Liability Property Damage 5,000
Bodily Injury - Motorist Uninsured 15,000/30,000

And in the state of Pennsylvania, drivers must carry the following coverage in order to legally operate a motor vehicle:

Coverage Requirements
Liability Bodily Injury 15,000/30,000
Liability Property Damage 5,000
Medical Payments 5,000

Comparing CURE Insurance Quotes

When a CURE agent sits down to calculate your rate, the most important thing is your driving history. Things such as credit score, homeowner status, and your education level – elements which most providers consider when calculating your risk level – are left out of the equation when obtaining a quote from CURE.

CURE Auto Insurance Quote Comparison Legend: CURE Married Couple 25-Year-Old Driver Single Renter Senior Married Couple 20 40 60 80 100 120 140 160 180 200 $212 $51 $129 $115

In the graph above, there is a noticeable role reversal when it comes to how much CURE charges their customers. With most providers, a single driver age 25 or below would most likely be charged the highest rate out of any other demographic; however, with CURE, the exact opposite seems to be true. Likewise, a married couple who likely own their own home would probably see the lowest possible rate from most insurance providers. But since those elements aren’t given as much weight by CURE, it appears as though their “preferred-risk” privileged status isn’t getting them the discounts they otherwise might from a different provider.

Pros and Cons of CURE Insurance

Pro Con
Good for drivers with a clean record but less-than-perfect metrics (bad credit, no home ownership, no higher education, etc.) CURE only underwrites in NJ and PA
CURE usually offers lower premiums than their local competition Multiple customer complaints about long, complicated, and confusing claim processing

If you have a clean driving record, never get into an accident (or need to file a claim for any other reason) and can’t get an affordable rate from other providers based on elements such as your credit score or your home ownership status, CURE might be able to provide you with Automobile insurance coverage at an affordable price. However, you will need to be a New Jersey or Pennsylvania resident in order to have access to their business. And if you ever do need to file a claim with them, you might want to prepare yourself for a protracted battle with your insurance company.
