The United Services Automobile Association (USAA) has existed in some form or another since 1922. The roots of the company go all the way back to the military officers who founded the organization in order to insure their own vehicles – and eventually the vehicles of other service members. Anyone who is affiliated with the military is eligible to purchase auto, property, recreational, health, life insurance, and more.The ratings for USAA are pretty strong, and they’re strong in the categories where you would want an insurance company to have a good rating. Their financial strength is a confident A++ from AM Best, one of the leading credit and financial rating agencies in the market. Their rating with the BBB rose from a B+ to an A+ over the past few years. They also have a history of customer satisfaction with the NAIC and JD Power.
Ratings Agency | Rating |
AM Best Financial Strength Rating (2016) | A++ |
Better Business Bureau Rating (2016) | A+ |
NAIC Complaint Index (2012) | 0.75 (Better than Average) |

If you are affiliated with the military in some way, not only do you have access to USAA services, but you can also qualify for money-saving discounts. Some of those discounts can save you money for being a safe driver, taking a defensive driving course, being a good student, or taking Driver Training (if you are under 21). Other discounts include:
Discount Type | Discount Amount |
Airbag Discount | 6% – 9% |
Anti-Theft Devices | 25% |
Driver Training | 5% |
Low Annual Mileage Driven | 1% – 24% |
Car Storage on Military Base | 15% (Comprehensive only) |
USAA offers lots of different financial products and services to its military-affiliated customers. So many, in fact, it can be hard to get all of the pertinent information about their policies out there in the public eye for consumers to see. Their website advertises the fact that they sell auto insurance policies, as well as some of the discounts their customers are eligible for. Specifics on mandatory and optional coverage, however, is hard to find unless you talk directly with an agent. At the very least, you should be able to purchase the minimum mandatory coverage required by your state, which will likely include:
USAA may be a good company with affordable rates, but are they the best deal for you, specifically? Out chart below can help you figure this out:
Surprisingly, USAA offers exceptionally low rates for drivers who are under the age of 25. Most likely this can be explained by a combination of good student/good driver discounts, and also possibly because this is the age of most active duty military service members (who might receive substantial savings for being active). Aside from that particular demographic, their monthly rates are priced fairly competitively across the board.
Pro | Con |
Very affordable rates for Teenage motorists | USAA insurance products are only available for service members, specific government agencies, and family members of the above |
High customer service satisfaction ratings | No local offices available; communication with your USAA agent is done either online or over the phone |
Speedy claims service record |
